Languages of Nepal

The majority of Nepal’s languages are members of the Indo-European (of which the Indo-Aryan branch is spoken by around 82 percent of the people) and Tibeto-Burman linguistic families (spoken by about 17 percent). The Dravidian and Austro-Asiatic language groups make up the majority of the other languages spoken in Nepal.

Official Languages
Nepali is the federal level’s official working language, although the constitution allows each province to select one or more additional official working languages. On September 6, 2021, the Nepali Language Commission recommended 14 official languages for the nation’s various provinces.The preliminary of Nepal’s constitution says that all languages spoken as mother tongues in Nepal are the languages of the nation.

Language and their Families
The two main language families of Languages spoken in Nepal are indo-european and sino-tibetan(Indo-Aryan & TIbeto-Burman are sub of them), as can be seen in the image, which illustrates the languages spoken in Nepal and their families. Of course, there are many more languages spoken in Nepal than just these, 123 to be exact, but these are the ones that at least 1% of the population speaks.
